King Winter’s Birthday
This is my book of the year
Breathtakingly beautiful illustrations by Emily Sutton. King Winter wants a party, not any party but a special party. He invites his brother and sisters (Spring, Summer and Autumn) but all those seasons in one place causes havoc with nature. Adapted from a story written over 80 years ago by a young refugee fleeing Nazi persecution and only discovered in 2021. Emily based her illustrations on those used by the young author Ulrich Alexander Boschwitz. Sadly Ulruch did escape, he fled to Britain but was interned as an ‘enemy alien’ then shipped to Australia , reclassified as a ‘friendly alien’ only to then die when the ship taking him back to Britain was torpedoed by a German submarine - he was only 27.
